What is Sleep Study?

A sleep study, more formally known as a polysomnography, is performed to diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome (RLS). It involves spending the night at a sleep laboratory that’s part of a hospital or an outpatient sleep clinic. As you sleep, electrodes attached to your head and body monitor your brain waves, breathing, and movement. A technician watches as you sleep via a discreet camera.

While you sleep, a technologist monitors you’re:

  • Brain waves
  • Eye movements
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing pattern
  • Blood oxygen level
  • Body position
  • Chest and abdominal movement
  • Limb movement
  • Snoring and other noise you may make as you sleep

Sleep Test is done through SENSORS — there are NO NEEDLES involved.

There are different levels of Sleep Studies:-

A level 1 sleep study (Polysomnography) is an in lab sleep study. It has been the ‘gold standard’ for long but advancements in technology and the portability many patients may not require and can avoid having to sleep in a lab. Due to advancement in technology now full polysomnography can be performed in the comfort of your home by a trained technician who can view sleep data with the help of remote computer & Titration can be performed as well. However patients with co-morbidities (like: – hypertension, diabetes, COPD) should undergo in-lab study.

A comprehensive Home Sleep Study (attended level 2 study) is the most popular level of testing. This involves a trained technician putting on the leads and sensors and observing the sleep in your bedroom. The titration is done wherever required.

Level 3 sleep tests (unattended level 3 HST) are self- administered (sometimes techs may be asked to administer this just to jack up the costs) sleep tests to rule in Sleep Apnea and are done where the Sleep Apnea is very obvious and there are time and cost constraints. There is no monitoring of sleep (no EEG, EMG, and EOG) but just the cardio-respiratory parameters during sleep. There is no provision for titration in this.

Purpose of Test

Your doctor may want you to have a sleep study if you have trouble falling asleep, wake up frequently, snore, or have other symptoms of a sleep disorder.

Sleep studies are designed to diagnose sleep disorders, including:

  • Sleep apnea (a total obstruction of breathing that lasts for more than 10 seconds)
  • Parasomnias (sleep behaviors)
  • Narcolepsy
  • Insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Circadian rhythm disorders

Important Things to Know About Sleep Studies

  • A sleep study is done to look at your sleep. Your doctor will be able to work out if you have a sleep problem and, if so, what it is.
  • The sleep study can be done either at home or by staying overnight in a sleep centre.
  • Together, you and your doctor will decide where the sleep study should be done.
  • It lasts one night, during this time you will wear leads & attached with sensors to record information on how you sleep.
On the day of your test:
  • Try to follow your regular routine as much as possible.
  • Avoid napping
  • Eliminate use of caffeine after lunch
You may need an additional in-lab sleep study if:
  • Your home sleep apnea test did not record enough data for a physician to make a diagnosis
  • Your home sleep apnea test results indicate that you do not have obstructive sleep apnea and the physician suspects another sleep disorder

Why Sleep Study is soo Expensive?

We at our Sleep Centre get frequent calls from patient’s who have been advised Sleep Study by their GP/Doctor. The most common question asked is “How much will the Sleep Study cost? This is  part of an exercise they embark upon trying to check and compare the cost with various service providers. The answer to this question is so baffling that it leaves them even more confused. We regularly get patients who are quoted anywhere from 2,000 to 20,000 Rupees for a Sleep Study !

To get them out of this dilemma and to Empower them I am elaborating on some key points about the Costs of Sleep Studies.
✔️ At present time none of the health insurances in India cover the cost of a sleep study thus it is mostly out of pocket expense.
✔️ There are different levels of Sleep Studies and all sleep studies are not the same.
